Ok, so wish me luck!

This will be my new PC Build for a musical customer, using some of the parts (well his SPU) of his Ancient P4 3.0GHz S478 XP Home! SP2

It is going to be dragged into the 21st Century :)

Spec and prices as follows, I have been looking forward to this for a while, pics etc to follow inspired by Mr Bill :)

I'm glad my thread was so useful!

When I get the parts I will start another!

David, why don't you go with the Intel Core i7 875K 2.93GHZ instead since you can easily overclock it and then pair it with an appropriate Gigabyte Socket 1156 motherboard?

This system is for a customer, strictly no over-clocking! I want S1366 tech to stay as future proof as is possible. He mentioned wanting it to last 10 years, so I hope ATX is still around then!

Also the P55 chip-set has PCI-e expansion issues, but as you can see it won't be a problem for that card or his 19" monitor!

If this was my system I would consider the 875K as yeah it only needs simple over-clocking :)

You don't have to tell them you overclocked it. Tell them this is Intel's "starter bike" line of processors and once they are comfortable with the system you can "take off" the training wheels so they have an even better experience or just keep them at 2.93GHz. <g>

I just noticed that, for a similar price, you could get a faster processor that could also become a *much* faster processor. I need to look at the specs of Socket 1156 and Socket 1366.

Good luck on the build.

Evan

I don't disagree with you, just that this guy gives me enough trouble without wondering if his O/C has caused problems!

It should be a nice upgrade for him, as his current system is a S478 P4 3.0Ghz with a slow PATA!! HDD and 1Gb of DDR1 Ram! He also has more startup apps than a teenagers Windows ME system running "limewire!"

I wonder if Scott will tell me off for calling it DDR1? :)

Actually this guy was one of my first customers from 2005, so I do value him... ish! :)

I don't buy ATI cards because they retire them too early, my ATI X1950XT is more than capable of Aero, yet the drivers are legacy for Windows 7 (No aero)

p.s ordered the stuff hoping on delivery tomorrow, normally I use the cheap delivery but wanted a project for the weekend!

Scott,

You will spend much more building your own system. You can get a much better deal purchasing one from the major manufactures. The experience is great though.

IRQ conflicts...my Fast Eddie + digital coax i/o 16-bit ISA(?) ADC-DAC card days... a long time ago.

The one thing about Building a computer is you can rebuild it. The cost to build your own system even if it low end. i3 with intergraded gpu. $500 give or take. Then Upgrade to dual Ati Crossfire setup or a i7 cpu and pritty much have a new system.

Are you suggesting that instead of ATI or do have that card or do you want that card?

It is nice and stable to use so far :)

well done three cheers for dave,

sorry evan, the gigabyte video card speaks for itself, it is a
modern day, feat of engineering, no need to post comments on perfection,
if i was spending over a thousand pounds on a desktop pc i would use that card,

two of them or four would be better ( quad sli )
but i do not think they would fit

they would also double as a hand warmer on a cold day, lol , siya karl.......

I was impressed with the card when I looked at it, I just didn't know why you posted it. All good reasons though. I need to keep that one in mind for an upgrade for an old system I'd like to use for an HTPC. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

the saphire radeon hd5450 cost less than half the price of the gigabyte evan,
and its more available, and comes with a choice of display port or hdmi,

and the default display is a lot better than my saphire radeon hd 4650
costing a third more,

the saphire hd 5450 is a newer card,
and will overclock on a budget,
